Being a taxpayer entails realizing the value of investing some of your income in the development of the nation. You can ask for a Tax Identification Number (TIN) ID at the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) office that is most convenient for you as proof that you are a paying citizen and a responsible citizen.
This ID is essential if you require a genuine ID that you can obtain within a day. Here is a guide on how to obtain a TIN ID, along with information on requirements, costs, and other crucial details.
What is a TIN ID?
Every registered taxpayer in the Philippines is issued a Taxpayer Identification Number Identification Card, commonly known as a TIN card or TIN ID card, which contains their identification number. It is mostly used for tax purposes, although some governmental organizations and financial institutions also accept it as a legitimate ID.
The BIR ID includes your TIN, full name, birth date, card issuance date, address, photo, and signature, among other pieces of personal data. Its logo and printing are exclusive to the BIR office. Your identity and status as a registered taxpayer are both verified by a TIN ID.
Additionally, there is no expiration date for the TIN ID. Therefore, both the new green TIN ID and the yellow-orange TIN card that was previously provided are acceptable TIN IDs.
Since it is constructed of thin, tiny cardboard, the majority of cardholders laminate it to guard against scuffs, watermarks, and general wear and tear.
What Purpose Does the TIN ID Card Serve?
Some government organizations, such as NBI for your clearance application and PNP for police clearance, accept a TIN card as a legitimate main ID. However, certain organizations only accept it as a backup ID, including the SSS, PSA, and the Philippine Postal Corporation.
Additionally, the BIR-issued ID card is not accepted as a primary form of identification by the PAG-IBIG Fund or the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
Some businesses don’t view it as a primary or solo ID because it is a printed piece of paper. Banks like BPI or Metrobank, for example, do not view it as a stand-alone proof of identification when you are opening a bank account, although others like LANDBANK do.
Therefore, always bring a government-issued legitimate ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, or postal ID, as your primary identification, and display your TIN card as your secondary identification whenever you trade with a government agency, commercial facility, or financial institution.

Where to Get a TIN ID in the Philippines
Can I obtain a TIN ID at any branch of BIR? No, you can’t easily apply for your TIN ID at any branch.
In the Philippines, each taxpayer is given a single Revenue District Office (RDO) that has authority over their place of home or place of business. At your assigned RDO, you can make tax payments, amend information, or obtain or replace TIN IDs.
By calling the BIR Customer Assistance Division hotline at 8538-3200 or sending an email to [email protected], you can check your RDO.
How Employees and People with Existing TINs Can Obtain a TIN ID
Employees must personally appear at their RDO to submit their TIN card application in accordance with BIR’s Revenue Memorandum Order No. 37-2019. Bring a valid ID with you.
The taxpayer may send an authorized representative on the designated date if there is an emergency or if there are good reasons why they cannot visit the branch. To obtain the TIN ID, the designated representative needs a special power of attorney (SPA).
The taxpayer must state the cause for their absence, the full name of the authorized representative, and their relationship to the representative in the SPA form. The paper must be notarized and bear the taxpayer’s signature.
The authorized representative must provide both the taxpayer’s and their legitimate identification together with the SPA.
Self-employed people who already have a TIN and want to apply for a TIN card must follow the same procedure.
